Help? with hosting

Your website needs some space on the web in order for it to be available for viewing by anyone, anywhere in the world with an internet connection. A web host provides this service for a small monthly fee. We recommend 1& for your hosting requirements. We also recommend that you open your own hosting account with 1& so that you have complete independence and full ownership and control over your domain name, web space, code and images. It is a straightforward process - see full step-by-step instructions below (also available in a PDF document for printing).

All hosting packages with 1& allow for multiple websites, meaning that you can use one hosting package for more than one website.

How to order a hosting package and domain name from 1&

  1. go to 1& - hover on the navigation tab labelled "WEB HOSTING" / select 'Linux Hosting' from the dropdown
  2. click on 'SIGN UP' under the '1&1 Starter' package heading (if you require more than one database you will need to select the '1&1 Standard' package)
  3. on the next page "Check the availability of your desired domain" - key in the domain name you require - e.g. mynewdomain and check the "" box (or .com if required, or both), then click "> Check"
NOTE: check carefully that you have correctly typed in your domain name!
Click on 'Choose a domain later' if you already have a domain name.
  4. on the next screen you will see at the top that your chosen domain (hopefully) is available and the box "your selection" is already checked - click "> Continue"
  5. next comes the sales pages - "your name is your brand" - click "> no thanks continue without selection" - at the bottom of the screen (not "continue")
  6. then you will get more offers (e.g. E-Shop, SEO Pro, Norton) - for each offer click "> no thank you continue order"
  7. then you see your basket details - hopefully the Setup Fee will be FREE - click on 'Continue'
  8. now you enter your address details. If the site is a personal site, rather than business, you will have the option for 'Whois Opt-out' - the checkbox appears at the bottom of the screen if you select 'Personal' site. If you uncheck the tickbox your address details will not be published by the registry Nominet (this option to opt out of listing your address details in the Nominet registry is for .uk domains only - it does not apply to .com domain names - these domains are under the control of a different organisation).
  9. the rest should be plain sailing - entering payment details and finishing off the transaction

1&1 will send you a welcome email. Please forward on the account details (including user name & password) so that we can access the control panel on your behalf.
